Before starting The Picture of Dorian Gray Summary let’s discuss the book writer. Oscar Wilde was born in 16 October 1854 and died in 30 November 1900. There are many books by Oscar Wilde but the most famous and best remembered for his plays, book is The Picture of Dorian Gray. He has also written the books of poems in united states and Canada then he returned back to London and worked as a Journalist.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is a novel written by the famous writer Oscar Wilde. Its story revolves around one of the characters of this novel named Dorian Gray who is a beautiful and handsome young man. The story of the novel starts from the arrival of Dorian in London at where he meets Hallward Basil, a painter, who is very much inspired by Dorian’s beauty and he tries to capture the beauty of Dorian by making a portrait of him. Which became basil’s masterpiece.

After that Dorian meets another person Lord Henry who is Basil’s friend. During the meeting, Henry talks about Dorian’s beauty and says that he should take care of his boyhood and acquire all the happiness and pleasure that he can. Henry also says to Dorian; although now you are a beautiful and handsome man, but with the passage of time your beauty and handsomeness will fade over. After the completion of Basil’s portrait, it instantly indicates that he will not remain young, handsome and attractive but his portrait will.

After listening to the talk or prediction of Lord Henry, Dorian Gray wants to remain the same till the end and also wishes that his painting would bear all the destruction or changes instead of him and in return, he is willing to give his soul.

Then Dorian meets a girl named Sibyl Vane and started to love her. Due to Sibyl (Dorian’s newly found love), he denies admitting Lord Henry’s point of view of hedonism.  After that Dorian, Basil and Henry go towards the theater at where Sibyl is working as an actress in the play. But after very short time Henry & Basil decided to leave the theater due to Sibyl’s unpleasant performance. Her real love with Dorian became the main reason behind the horrible performance during the play and she decided to stop doing acting.

After knowing that Sybil left the acting, Dorian immediately rejects and tells her that he will not meet again with her because he believes that he just fell in love with Sybil’s acting and not with her. After a night, Dorian realizes that he committed a mistake and he should apologize from Sibyl next day. But that night Sybil committed a suicide.

Dorian consider himself responsible for the suicide of Sybil, but Lord Henry tries to convince Dorian that he shouldn’t be sad about Sybil’s Suicide and take the suicide of Sybil as an artistic expression of love.  Due to every sin of Dorian, the portrait becomes more ugly which forced him to cover the portrait.  After that Dorian starts reading a yellow book (A French Novel) that influenced him a lot. The story of the French Novel is revolved around a young Parisian man who lived his whole life for seeking out happiness.

Next, Dorian goes to see the portrait and after seeing the portrait, he becomes worried because of worst changes in the portrait due to his wrong actions and with the passage of time It became more and more ugly. After some years, the painter Basil meets Dorian and requests him to utilize his influence and power for virtue and good, as opposed to the evil that he’s been utilizing it for.

Dorian says to Basil that he would like to show his soul to him and then he took Basil to the room where the portrait was placed.  After seeing the Portrait, Basil was shocked due to the horrified and disgusting version of Dorian on the portrait. In anger, Dorian blames that Basil is responsible for it, and Murderers Basil.

The very next day, Dorian goes towards Alan Campbell who is a scientist by profession and a close friend to him. He asks for Campbell’s help in disposing of the body. Campbell denies initially, but after blackmailing by Dorian, Campbell agrees to help him in disposing of the body.

After that, Dorian goes to a party which he finds rather boring and then that night he decided to visit an opium den. Dorian wants to forget his wrongdoings and sins by using drugs Instead of facing them. When he left the opium den, a man named James (Sybil’s brother) follows him for taking the revenge of his sister Sybil’s murder.

After that Dorian eventually goes on the hunting trip at where a hunter, accidentally kills James. After that incident, Dorian contact with Lord Henry and tells him that he had murdered Basil, but Henry doesn’t believe him. Then Dorian decides to see the portrait to Investigate whether It helped or not, but this time the portrait of him had become more horrified and worse than before.

He feels disappointment and decides to destroy the portrait. He stabs the heart of the portrait with a knife. In result, Dorian Gray becomes horrible and ugly, while his portrait returns into its original form. Dorian Gray lies dead on the floor, with the knife in his heart.
