A portrait of the artist as a Young man is a unique novel. It’s narrated by the main character, Stephen. The novels starts out when Stephen is a young child and ends when he’s finished with college. The novel begins with Stephen as a toddler being told a story by his father about a moocow. Then, Stephen is sent to a boarding school named Clongowes Wood College. There, he recalls watching the boys play sports. He’s intimidated by them since he feels weak and frail in comparison. He’s also teased by the older boys at school. One very interesting point that he brings up is when he’s in geography class.

He writes: “Stephen Dedalus, Class of Elements, Clongowes Wood College, Sallins, Country Kildare, Ireland, Europe, The World, The Universe”. But then he wonders if there’s anything beyond the universe? If there was nothing, then there must be some thin line that serves as the border. He gives up trying to think about this, and chalks it up to God. Unfortunately, he thinks that because the universe is so big that must mean he’s small.

Also, he wonders when he’ll grow up and be like the big kids who study advanced topics like trigonometry. He betrays himself and gives up all his most interesting questions. In their place, he accepts what his religious teachers tell him. Unfortunately, he is too young to know that they know as little as he does. He tries to be good child and follow the religious rules like praying before bed.

Then, Stephen gets sick. This only compounds his ideas about himself that he is a weak and sickly person. He writes home to his mom asking her to come home and pick him up from school. Then, he ponders what his funeral would be like. Portrait of a Young Man Stephen is now old enough to wonder about money.

He realizes that his father is quite poor compared to the other children’s father. He also realizes that father would give him more money than he asked for. His father was generous and loving. Stephen goes home for the holidays to hear his family argue about politics and religion. As a child, he’s conflicted about who to believe. The religious school is oppressive. In one case, he’s beaten because his glasses broke.
